Jay Shah, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, on Monday, announced the introduction of prize money for the Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament award winners at the domestic level. The new initiative will apply to all women’s and junior cricket competitions as well as the Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali tournaments for senior men players.

Making the announcement, Shah said that the new initiative aims to acknowledge and reward exceptional performances at the domestic level.

“We are introducing prize money for the Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament in all Women’s and Junior Cricket tournaments under our Domestic Cricket Programme. Additionally, prize money will be awarded for the Player of the Match in the Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali tournaments for Senior Men,” Shah wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“This initiative aims to recognize and reward outstanding performances in the domestic circuit. A heartfelt thank you to the Apex Council for their unwavering support in this endeavour. Together, we are fostering a more rewarding environment for our cricketers. Jai Hind” the BCCI secretary added.

In 2023, the BCCI had raised the prize money for domestic tournaments. In the Ranji Trophy, India’s premier domestic competition, winners were given a substantial sum of INR 5 crore. The prize for the Irani Cup was also doubled, with winners being granted INR 50 lakh, up from INR 25 lakh, while the runners-up received INR 25 lakh. Meanwhile, in the Duleep Trophy, the winners are awarded INR 1 crore, and the runners-up get fifty percent of this sum. In addition, the Vijay Hazare Trophy winners are granted INR 1 crore, with the second-place team getting INR 50 lakh.

The BCCI has previously introduced an incentive scheme for Test cricket. Players who have been part of the starting lineup in more than 50 percent of Test matches in a season since 2022-23 will receive an amount of INR 30 lakh per game. Notably, the board has allocated a total corpus of Rs 40 crore for this scheme. Meanwhile, for players taking part in at least 75 percent of matches in a season, the amount will increase to INR 45 lakh per match. This incentive is in addition to the INR 15 lakh paid per Test match by the BCCI.
