India began their busy Test schedule on September 19, facing off Bangladesh in the opening Test of the two-match series at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Bangladesh skipper, Najmul Hossain Shanto, won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first. Bangladesh’s decision came as a surprise as it was the first time in seven years a team opted to bowl in a Test match in India, but India said they would opt for the same.

Veteran spin all-rounders Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja stole the Day 1’s show for India, rescuing the side from a shaky 144 for 6. The duo stitched a stunning unbroken partnership of 195 runs as India reached 339/9 on stumps. Ashwin, who turned 38 a couple of days ago, emerged as the standout among the two, scoring his sixth Test century. Jadeja, on the other hand, provided solid support, ending the day unbeaten on 86.

Bangladesh’s right-arm fast-medium bowler, Hasan Mahmud, was the architect of India’s early collapse, as he rattled through the top order with his gentle seam movement. He got the prized scalps of India skipper Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli in quick succession. After Kohli’s dismissal, India were reeling at 34 for 3. However, they attempted to make a comeback, but Mahmud’s persistence proved crucial as he struck again after lunch, as India lost three more wickets.

However, they attempted to make a comeback, but Mahmud’s persistence proved crucial as he struck again after lunch, as India lost three more wickets.

After India lost three wickets, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant steadied the innings, forming a 62-run stand for the fourth wicket. Unfortunately, the wicketkeeper-batter’s aggressive approach led to his downfall just before lunch, falling to a poorly judged cut shot in Mahmud’s delivery. He has scored 39 off 52 deliveries, including six boundaries. However, Jaiswal continued to impress, hitting his sixth consecutive home Test with a half-century. He managed to score 56 off 118 deliveries, before being dismissed by Nahid Rana. Meanwhile, KL Rahul fell to a stunning catch by Zakir Hasan at short leg in the 43rd over.

Despite a spirited effort from Mahmud, the Bangladesh spinners struggled to contain the runs. At that time, Ashwin entered the fray and quickly turned the tide. The veteran launched an aggressive counterattack against Bangladesh bowlers while Jadeja joined in the assault. Ashwin reached his century off just 108 balls just minutes before stumps. Jadeja, on the other hand, celebrated with a drilled boundary that pushed him into the 80s.
