India kicked off their Test season with a stunning victory against Bangladesh by 280 runs in the first Test of the two-match series at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The hosts won the game up on Day 4 with over five sessions to spare, dismissing Bangladesh for 234 during their chase of 515 runs. The win allowed India to take a 1-0 lead in the series but also solidified their position at the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) points table.

While this win significantly strengthens India’s chances of qualifying for the WTC final for the third consecutive time, they still need four more victories in their remaining nine Tests. This includes the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur, starting on September 27. After this, India will host New Zealand for a three-match series next month, followed by a tour to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series later this year.

On the flip side, Bangladesh, which had risen to fourth place after a historic 2-0 series victory against Pakistan last month, saw their loss drop them to sixth position. Additionally, their points percentage (PCT) also fell from 45.83 to 39.28.

In terms of the game, after being put to bat first under overcast skies and seam-friendly conditions at Chepauk, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja rescued the side with a record 199-run partnership following a shaky start. Ashwin scored 113, the sixth Test century of his career and Jadeja scored 86 as India achieved a total of 376 in their first innings.

Later, India’s premier pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, led the charge against Bangladesh, claiming four wickets and bowled the visitors out for 149. Following this, Shubman Gill (119 not out) and Rishabh Pant (109) both scored centuries, with Rohit Sharma declaring the second innings at 287 for four, setting a mammoth target of 515. The tourists faltered from the beginning of the final innings, collapsing for 234 on Day 4, with Ashwin and Jadeja, picking six and three wickets, respectively, to secure the win for India.

Following this win, India extended their perfect record against Bangladesh in Test history. India’s points percentage (PCT) rose to 71.66, totaling 86 points from 10 Tests. It is worth noting that India had already led the table at the start of the series. The team led by Rohit Sharma has now increased its advantage over second-placed and current champions Australia to 9.16 percent.
