Lewis and Rutherford help West Indies thrash Sri Lanka in 3rd ODI

by Robin Sharma
Evin Lewis and Sherfane Rutherford

After losing the first two games, West Indies won the third and final match in style to end the series. They won the match by 8 wickets (DLS method). Sri Lanka won the series 2-1. They also won the T20I series 2-1.

West Indies won the toss and opted to bowl. Sri Lanka were off to a flying start. Openers Pathum Nissanka (56 runs) and Avishka Fernando (34 runs) scored 81 runs for the first wicket. Rain interrupted the game when Sri Lanka was 81-1 after 17.2 overs.

After a long wait, it was decided through DLS that it would be a 23-over match. Kusal Mendis scored 56 runs in just 22 deliveries and Sri Lanka ended with 156-3 in 23 overs. West Indies got a target of 195 through DLS.

Roston Chase and Sherfane Rutherford picked up one wicket each. West Indies were off to a good start as well. Brandon King and Evin Lewis scored 36 in 5.4 overs before King got out. Then Shai Hope joined Evin Lewis.

Brilliant performances from Lewis and Rutherford saw West Indies over the line

After the loss of the first wicket, Lewis took responsibility on his shoulders. He was batting very positively and continued playing his shots. He had his share of luck as Wanindu Hasaranga dropped him off Madushanka’s bowling. Shai Hope looked horribly out of touch. He ended up scoring 22 off 27 deliveries before getting out.

Then Sherfane Rutherford joined Evin Lewis and both had a match-winning partnership of 88* in just 45 deliveries. Lewis reached his century with a six when 5 was needed off 7 balls. He scored 102* runs. Rutherford scored his third consecutive fifty in the series in just 26 deliveries. He scored 50* including 3 sixes and 4 fours.

Asitha Fernando and Dilshan Madushanka picked up one wicket each for Sri Lanka.

Both sides were horrible in the field today. West Indies dropped as many as 5 catches. Sri Lanka too dropped both Lewis and Rutherford and both went on to win the match. Lewis also twisted his ankle while running but kept on batting despite being in pain.
