Mayank Yadav to miss out on action due to career-threatening injury

The right-arm speedster Mayank Yadav is reportedly ruled out for next few months of cricket action due to a back injury.

As per reports, Indian fast bowling sensation Mayank Yadav has been ruled out of cricketing action for the next few months. In order to recover from an alleged back injury, the 22-year-old is currently at the BCCI’s newly inaugurated Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.

Mayank recently made his international debut in a T20I fixture against Bangladesh. Interestingly, he started off his international career with a maiden over. The three-match series saw him return with four wickets at an economy of 6.91.

The right-arm pacer underwent intense recovery and rehab procedure at CoE (formerly NCA) after suffering an abdominal strain during Indian Premier League 2024. However, he left a lasting impression in just four appearances, where he grabbed seven wickets. Yadav threw down bullets at a speed of over 150 kph consistently, while clocking his highest of 156.7 kph. Since then, he has been termed a future prospect for India.

However, the recent development suggests it might be a long route for Mayank Yadav to follow after sustaining a serious back injury. The concerns also ruled Mayank Yadav out of the T20I series against South Africa and also the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

“He’s back here for another problem, which might keep him out for two-three months. Mostly its something related to the back, but there’s not much clarity into it. But then, it’s also something which is believed to keep him out for a considerable amount of time,” the source told IANS.

“The way with which he came here, the first feelers from it are giving a look of him being out for two-three months initially and maybe, it could be more,” source added.

Mayank Yadav is set to be retained by LSG for IPL 2025

Although, Mayank Yadav is still recovering from his severe injury, he is likely to be retained by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The confirmation of the same would come on October 31, when the franchise will announce their final retentions.

Interestingly, Yadav was bought by the Super Giants for his base price of INR 20 lakh in the IPL 2022 auction. After not featuring in 2022, he was ruled out of the following season due to injury. After his four-game stint in 2024 and performance in Bangladesh series, he is expected to be among the retainees by LSG.

Moreover, Nicholas Pooran is set to be the top retention of the franchise, due to his blistering form. Notably, he slammed 499 runs in IPL 2024, emerged as West Indies’ top run-getter in T20 World Cup and also topped the batting charts in CPL.

Other key retention for the team would be Ravi Bishnoi, who is currently the No. 9-ranked T20I bowler. Among the uncapped players, Ayush Badoni and Mohsin Khan are looked upon as certain retentions.

As of now, reports state that skipper KL Rahul has fallen off the radar of LSG’s team management due to his strike rate. However, the franchise could also use the right-to-match (RTM) card for him at the auction.
