Former India cricketer and batting coach, Sanjay Bangar’s son comes out as a trans person. Aryan Bangar, underwent a hormone replacement surgery.

Aryan Bangar revealed this via an Instagram post. This revelation has created a buzz amongst the fans. Sanjay Bangar played for India and was involved in coaching capacity with the Indian team and many IPL franchiAryan is an aspiring cricketer. He’s changed his name from Aryan to Anaya. 10-months after the surgery, he now identifies as a trans person. 

The Instagram post read, “Chasing my dream of playing cricket professionally has been a journey filled with sacrifices, resilience, and unwavering dedication. From early mornings on the field to face the doubts and judgments of others, every step has demanded strength”.

“But beyond the game, I had another journey. A path of self-discovery and a lot of challenges faced. Embracing my true self meant making hard choices, letting go of the comfort of fitting in, and standing up for who I am, even when it wasn’t easy”

The Instagram post further read, “Today, I’m proud to be a part of the sport I love at any level or category, not only as an athlete but as my authentic self. The road hasn’t been easy, but finding my true self has been the greatest victory of all”. 

Anaya also calls for inclusivity in cricket. The current laws prohibit trans people from participating in women’s international cricket. 

Another Instagram post from Anaya’s account read, “I never thought I’d have to consider giving up the sport that has been my passion, my love and my escape”.

What hurts more is that there are no proper regulations for trans women in cricket. It feels like the system is forcing me out. Not because I lack the drive or talent but because the rules haven’t caught up with the reality of who I am”.

Sanjay Bangar has played 12 Tests and 15 ODIs for India. He was the assistant coach for Team India from 2017 to 2019. Bangar also served as the head coach of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru from 2021-2023. He was also the head coach of the Punjab Kings from 2014-2016.
