Former Indian player and wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik said that India should select Varun Chakaravarthy for the upcoming Champions Trophy.
He feels it will be a “grave error” if the off-spinner is not picked for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Varun Chakarvarthy has been in phenomenal form in the last 12-18 months. He did a great job for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. He has been in good form for India since his return to the T20I setup.
Dinesh Karthik posted on his “X” (formerly Twitter) handle calling for Chakaravarthy’s selection in the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy next year.
“Varun Chakaravarthy turning out to be an outstanding bowler”: Karthik
Karthik posted, “If India don’t pick Varun Chakravarthy for the Champions Trophy, then they are making a grave error. Outstanding bowler he is turning out to be”.
Varun made his India debut in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. He didn’t have a great debut and was sidelined from the squad after that. The off-spinner picked up 21 wickets in 15 games in IPL 2024. It was the second most in the season. He played a key role in KKR’s third title triumph in the tournament.
He recently picked up a 5-wicket haul in the second match of the ongoing T20I series against South Africa. Chakaravarthy picked up 3 wickets in the first match of the series.
After his impressive performance in the IPL, he returned to the Indian T20I squad earlier this year. He has done a great job in the national colours in the shortest format. In the T20I series against Bangladesh in October, he picked up 5 wickets in the three games.
Chakaravarthy is yet to make his ODI and test debut for India. He’s been in good form in T20Is and can turn out to be India’s lead spinner in the 50-over format. He has also been retained by the Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2025.
