Former India captain and one of the greats of the game, Sunil Gavaskar says that KKR will bid for Shreyas Iyer in the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction.
Iyer led the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title in IPL 2024. But surprisingly, he was released from the KKR squad for IPL 2025. Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore said after the retentions that the franchise and Iyer weren’t on the same page.
KKR have retained Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Ramandeep Singh and Harshit Rana ahead of the mega auction. The marquee will be held in Jeddah, Saud Arabia on 24th-25th November 2024.
Legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar said that there have been times when the player and franchise have some disagreements regarding the player’s fees. He feels that KKR will bid for the middle-order batter in the auction.
He said, “When KKR won last year (IPL 2024), Shreyas Iyer was the captain. As I said earlier for Rishabh Pant as well, at times, there could be a disagreement on the fees”.
The 29-year-old batter scored 351 runs in IPL 2024 at an average of 39 and struck at 146.90. He scored a couple of fifties as well.
“Delhi Capitals may also bid for Shreyas Iyer”: Sunil Gavaskar
The former Indian captain further said that if the Kolkata Knight Riders don’t bid for Iyer then the Delhi Capitals will bid for him. Iyer was a part of the Delhi Capitals till the 2021 season. The franchise played the IPL 2021 final under him.
Gavaskar said, “However, I also feel once Shreyas Iyer comes into the auction, KKR might also bid for his services. If KKR don’t bid, I feel Delhi will do that”.
Iyer is young and has a good experience of leading in the Indian Premier League. Many franchises like Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Lucknow Super Giants, Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings will be looking for a captain in the mega auction. Shreyas Iyer, without any doubts, will be in demand in the IPL 2025 auction at Jeddah.
