English batter Joe Root has said that he’d love to win the Ashes in Australia. The first test of the upcoming 3-match series against New Zealand will be the 150th test match for England’s star batter.
Root is one of the best test batters in world cricket and the best for England. He recently went past former captain Alastair Cook’s record of 12,472 test runs to become England’s highest run-scorer in the longest format.
Talking to The Guardian, Root reflected on his test journey. He said, “We’re fortunate to play so much Test cricket compared to other nations, so you can rattle them up rather quickly. But I’ve had to work hard and overcome different challenges along the way, so I’m very grateful to have had so many chances”.
Root has said that winning the Ashes in Australia will mean more than anything. England has failed to win the Ashesh down under since 2010-11.
Joe Root needs 625 runs to become second highest run-scorer in test history
The English batter said, “I’d love us to win the Ashes over there. That would mean more to me than anything. The last time England won in Australia was 2010-11 and I was there at the Darren Lehmann Academy in Adelaide.
During that Test, I was net-bowling against the guys that weren’t playing. I then went to Melbourne to watch the Boxing Day Test match. It was great to watch it unfold and to do something similar would be the ultimate”.
Joe Root is currently the 5th highest run-scorer in test history. He is behind Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid. Currently at 12,754 runs, he is 625 runs behind Ricky Ponting’s 13,378 test runs.
Root will surely become the player with the second most runs in test cricket. He is 3167 runs behind Sachin Tendulkar and it will be interesting to see if he can break that record.
