The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) announced its ‘Team of the Decade’. It includes top performers in the tournament over the last 10 years.
WBBL 2024 is the 10th edition of the Women’s Big Bash League. It was the first women’s franchise cricket league. Now it’s the second-best women’s franchise cricket league after the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in India.
The WBBL’s Team of the Decade was chosen by a combination of expert panel and public voting. 12 players have been included in WBBL’s Team of the Decade and only two overseas players made it into the side.
Clea Smith, Cricket Australia’s Director was the chairman of the expert panel. The members of the panel were: Mel Jones, Lisa Sthalekar, Matthew Mott, Quentin Hull, Laura Jolly and Alistair Dobson.
Important factors like batting strike rate, bowling economy, and match-winning performances were the key factors in the selection of this list of players.
Ellyse Perry appointed as captain of WBBL’s Team of the Decade
Australian all-rounder and one of the best in the game, Ellyse Perry will lead the Women’s Big Bash League’s Team of the Decade.
Perry has been a part of the Sydney Sixers for all 10 seasons of the tournament. She’s the only player to lead the side in all editions of the WBBL. Other big names include opener Beth Mooney, Australian skipper Alyssa Healy and former Australian captain Meg Lanning.
Mooney is also the all-time highest run-scorer in the tournament with 5051 runs in 141 innings at an average of 46.33.
White Ferns’ Sophie Dvine and South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp are the only overseas players to make the cut to WBBL Team of the Decade. Off-spinner Molly Strano, who’s the second-highest wicket-taker in the WBBL history is the 12th player in the list.
Former Sydney Sixers player, Sarah Aley is the only retired player in the list.
