Marcus Stoinis has shocked the world and has announced his retirement from ODI cricket. The seam-bowling all-rounder’s decision comes in with immediate effect and that means he will not take part in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025.

Having made his debut in 2015 against England, Stoinis only started becoming a regular member of the Australian ODI setup from 2017 onwards. His performance of 146 not out against New Zealand (coming in at 54/5 while chasing 287) in Auckland was his best in the format and helped him cement his spot in the side.

The Perth-born all-rounder has represented Australia in 71 ODIs and was a part of the 2023 World Cup winning squad. He finished his 50-over career with 1495 runs at an average of 26.69 and a strike-rate of 93.96. With the ball, he got 48 wickets.

The decision to bid adieu to ODI cricket comes as a shock all around with the Champions Trophy less than two weeks away. Stoinis was named in Australia’s preliminary 15-member squad for the eight-team event. They will now need to announce a replacement by the 12th of February which is the deadline to announce the finalized squads.

Stoinis admitted playing for Australia is something that he will always cherish and it has been an incredible journey.

Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish,” Stoinis was quoted saying after announcing his retirement.

The 35-year-old feels it is the right time to move away from the 50-over format and focus on T20 cricket.

This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Australia men’s team coach Andrew McDonald) and I’ve hugely appreciated his support. I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan,” Stoinis added.

The last ODI of Stoinis’ career came in November 2024 against Pakistan in Perth.
