When Rohit Sharma walked out for the toss and announced the team for the first ODI against England in Nagpur, there was a major surprise in store. Virat Kohli was missing from the playing XI. The former India captain had swelling on his right knee which ruled him out of the game.

India won the game by four wickets as they hunted down 249 with 11.2 overs to spare. However, they will be sweating over their premier No. 3’s fitness.

Shubman Gill confirmed that Kohli should be fine for the next game and admitted that there is nothing to worry. It was only on the morning of the game where had a knee swelling.

When he woke up in the morning, he had some swelling in his knee. He was fine till yesterday’s practice session. There’s nothing to worry about. He will definitely be fit for the next game,” Shubman Gill was quoted saying to the official broadcasters.

Batting at No. 3 wasn’t a huge adjustment: Gill

Shubman Gill batted superbly and scored a match-winning 87 in the first ODI against England in Nagpur.

Gill batted beautifully in the first game of the series. The 25-year-old top-order batter struck 87 off 96 balls in a knock which included 14 fours and was also awarded the Player of the Match. He walked out to bat at 19/1 which soon turned into 19/2.

He stitched a couple of crucial partnerships with Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel to lay the platform for India’s win. Gill added 94 runs with Iyer for the third wicket before putting on a 108-run stand with Axar to almost kill the game.

This knock didn’t come at his usual opening spot. With Jaiswal making his ODI debut, Gill was pushed to No. 3. But he admitted that it wasn’t a huge shift and all he needed to do was bat according to the situation of the game.

“I think I play at number three in Test matches, so it wasn’t a huge adjustment. But, definitely, the situation is slightly different. If you are batting at number three and early wickets fall, you have to play according to the situation. However, if the openers have built a good partnership, then you have to carry that momentum forward. That was my thought process – to bat according to the situation and the over in which I had to come in,” Gill added.

Kohli is likely to return to the playing XI for the second ODI which is scheduled for the 12th of February in Cuttack. He could replace Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gill might go back to the top of the order.
