The Indian team completed a clinical victory in the second fixture of the three-match ODI series against England on Sunday. It all went down at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, where captain Rohit Sharma led from the front to help India chase 305 and gain an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
England won the toss and opted to bat first. Yet again, the visitors were off to a great start, with the opening pair of Phil Salt and Ben Duckett. The duo looked at point with the positive approach, as both players secured consistent boundaries to steer the side at a terrific run rate of around 8.
However, their 81-run partnership was broken by debutant Varun Chakravarthy, who dismissed Phil Salt (26) in the 11th over. Soon, Ravindra Jadeja got Duckett (65) holed out at the long-on region, which brought India back into the game. After this dismissal, the run-rate of the visitors dipped as they tried to consolidate on their dominating position.
As it looked like Harry Brook (31) was looking to up the ante, Harshit Rana’s slower ball caught him unaware, as he could only get holed out to Shubman Gill, who produced a brilliant effort. Thereafter, Joe Root tried well to pull things back with skipper Jos Buttler.
In the 39th over, Hardik Pandya made Buttler (34) holed out to Gill at the long-off region. Three overs later, Root (69) tried to play an inside-out shot, but could not clear the fences and was caught by Pandya.
Thereafter, Liam Livingstone (41) played a fine knock to help England post 304 on the board. Jadeja was the wrecker-in-chief for the Indian side with figures of 3/35 in 10 overs.
Rohit Sharma’s stroke-filled knock fuels India’s series victory
In response to a 305-run target, captain Rohit Sharma started off the proceedings for the hosts in the second over. He came down the track to hit a four off Gus Atkinson and played a glorious flick shot for a six in the following delivery.
‘Hitman’ brought his former self in the next over, when he hit a delightful six towards the covers against Saqib Mahmood.
Rohit continued his aggressive approach to garner consistent boundaries, while Shubman Gill played as an anchor. The Indian captain completed his fifty off 30 balls, and looked in total control. Meanwhile, Gill silently got to his fifty off 45 balls, as the duo was looking comfortable at the crease.
However, their 136-run stand was broken by Jamie Overton, who broke the furniture of Gill (60) with his toe-crushing yorker in the 17th over. Thereafter, Virat Kohli got off the mark with a beautiful straight drive against Atkinson.
The 20th over witnessed Adil Rashid inducing an edge off the veteran batter and sending him back for 5. However, Rohit showed no signs of nervous nineties, as he clobbered two sixes to reach his 32nd ODI hundred in style.
The 30th over saw Rohit failing to send the full toss of Liam Livingstone to the stands, as it went up in the night skies to only get caught by Rashid at mid-wicket. He played a sensational knock of 119 off 90 balls, comprising 12 fours and seven sixes.
Thereafter, Shreyas Iyer (44) and Axar Patel (41*) continued their good form to help India chase down the score under 45 overs. Overton was the most successful bowler for England with two scalps.
Both teams meet in the final ODI on February 12 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
