Former batter Sunil Gavaskar has shared his prediction for Virat Kohli and the Indian team for the 2025 Champions Trophy. The much-awaited tournament is set to take place from February 19 to March 9 in Pakistan and the UAE.

Ahead of the Champions Trophy, Kohli has been inconsistent in terms of his contributions in international cricket. Despite scoring a century in Perth, Kohli ended up scoring only 190 runs in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at an average of under 25.

In his only Ranji Trophy appearance, Virat Kohli returned with a 6-run knock against Railways. In his recent ODI appearance against England, the right-hander was dismissed on 5 against England, which has added to his batting woes leading up to the big tournament.

However, Gavaskar has expressed his confidence in Virat Kohli’s habit of scoring runs in big games and thinks he will bring his former self in the Champions Trophy. Here’s what the 75-year-old wrote in his column for Sportstar:

“Kohli is a big-match player, and nothing will motivate him more than the opportunity to score runs and win the Champions Trophy for India. After the last Champions Trophy win in 2013, he celebrated with the Gangnam dance, which was the rage way back then. This time, if he helps India win, we could be in for another unique celebration from him.”

Further, Sunil Gavaskar feels India are the favorites heading into the Champions Trophy squad, largely due to the camaraderie among the squad members. He added:

“That’s why India, apart from the talent that they have, will start as firm favourites to win the ICC Champions Trophy once again. The spirit in the team is very good, as could be seen by their enthusiastic cheering of their teammates who won individual awards at the recent annual BCCI awards function. A team that is laughing with each other is a happy team that will invariably try and play for each other.”

How did Virat Kohli perform in 2017 Champions Trophy?

Virat Kohli was impressive in the 2017 edition of the Champions Trophy, with his ability to convert his starts into a big knock. The veteran batter slammed 258 runs in five innings at an exceptional average of 129.

Kohli’s finest knock came in the semi-final against Bangladesh, where he remained unbeaten on 96 off 78 balls, with 13 fours. His impressive knock helped the Indian team to chase 265 successfully with more than nine overs to spare.

Virat Kohli will once again be a key player for the Men in Blue, as they hope to regain Champions Trophy title after 12 years.
