‘We will not be looking at the individual milestones’: Rohit Sharma

Over the last few years, India have started go big right from the get-go in the white-ball formats. Rohit Sharma has led from the front and has looked to be very aggressive in the powerplay, scoring runs at a high strike-rate.

It was the case in the 2023 World Cup as well where he consistently gave India flying starts which set the platform for the big scores. Hence, the Indian captain wants more of the same from the team in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. He admitted that they don’t look at individual milestones and it’s all about contributing for the team.

That will be our focus. We will not be looking at the individual milestones and stuff like that. Whoever the two batters are in there; they have to do the job. And the guy who goes in after that has a job to do as well. So, if seven, eight of us think like that, we will end up getting the score that we are looking for. It’s just about everyone contributing to the cause,” Rohit Sharma was quoted saying in the press conference ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025.

India had a superb template in the 2023 World Cup. Rohit gave blazing starts at the top while Virat Kohli consolidated and batted through the innings at No. 3. Shubman Gill was solid alongside Rohit at the top while Shreyas Iyer attacked the spinners in the middle overs. KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya (for the first few games) and Ravindra Jadeja gave them a flourishing finish at the death.

Hence, Rohit believes that if one or two of the top four or five batters get a big score, it sets the team on course for a big score.

Your top-three, four, five batters need to get that big score for you to post a big score eventually. So, I think our top-four batters are quite experienced. And we know that once they are set, they like to get those big runs. We’ve seen it as well when we played that ODI World Cup (in 2023), there were only a few hundreds that we scored, but we went on to score quite a few times, 350-plus scores, or 330 scores like that,” the India captain added.

There are only two spinners and three all-rounders: Rohit

India are likely to play two spin-bowling all-rounders alongside Kuldeep Yadav.

There has been a lot of debate around the Indian squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. They picked as many as five spin options in the side. However, Rohit believes that only two of them are frontline spinners and the remaining three are all-rounders who add a different dimension to the team.

There only two spinners, the rest are all-rounders. They can bat and bowl. We play to our strengths. The three all-rounders give a different dimension to the squad, they add a lot to the squad. We wanted to have players with two skills rather than one,” Rohit explained.

India will play their first game in the Champions Trophy 2025 against Bangladesh in Dubai on the 20th of February.
