Former Australian captain Aaron Finch slammed Sunil Gavaskar for his insensitive remarks on the Australian team. Finch’s comments come after Gavaskar’s latest column for the Sportstar.

It all started after the third day of the first test in Perth, where the Australian team were under incessant pressure at 12/3 in pursuit of chasing a mammoth target of 534. After a difficult day in the office, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood appeared in the press conference.

On being asked about how Australia could turn the game in their favor, Hazlewood said:

“You probably have to ask one of the batters that question… I’m probably looking mostly towards the next Test.”

Hazlewood’s response sent the rumor mills buzzing about the rift between the batters and bowlers in the Australian team. Even former Aussie keeper Adam Gilchrist smelled a divide between both groups owing to the tone of the pacer’s comments.

What Sunil Gavaskar wrote on his column?

After India registered a dominating 295-run victory, Gavaskar wrote a column on December 2 on Sportstar. An excerpt of his column was dedicated to the tensions in the Australian team and Josh Hazlewood reportedly being ruled out of the test series due to injury.

“The panic in the Australian ranks is palpable, with former players calling for heads to be chopped off and some even hinting at cracks in the Australian team after Josh Hazlewood’s media interview at the end of the third day’s play, where he suggested that it was up to the batters to now do something,” Gavaskar wrote.

“Now, a few days later, Hazlewood is out of the second Test and possibly the series too with a supposed side strain. Strange, that, since nobody had noticed anything wrong with Hazlewood at that media conference. Mystery, mystery — the like of which used to be common in Indian cricket in the past. Now it’s the Aussies, and like old McDonald, I’m simply loving it,” he added.

In an interaction on ESPNcricinfo, Finch was highly critical of Gavaskar for his column and felt it was disrespectful for the entire Australian team.

“It’s not jabs anymore. Sunny is throwing haymakers over the top. It’s quite funny because, having spent a lot of time with him during the first test, he was not saying things like that. He was very respectful of the current Australian group. But now he has just gone bang.”

Australia slipped to third position in WTC standings

After losing the first test against India in Perth, the Australian team slipped to the second position in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. The visitors again rose to the top spot with nine wins in 15 games with a point percentage of 61.11.

However, South Africa were exceptional with their performance in the opening test against Sri Lanka last week in Durban. They registered a monumental 233-run victory to jump to the second spot in the WTC table. The Proteas have five wins in nine appearances and possess a point percentage of 59.26.

Meanwhile, Australia descended to the third spot with eight victories in 13 games and a point percentage of 57.69. They will have to be potent enough in the Adelaide test beginning on December 6 against India, to maintain their grip in the current WTC cycle.
