Indian left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh scored his highest List-A score of 49 on Saturday (January 11). It all happened during the third quarter-final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy between Punjab and Maharashtra in Vadodara on January 11.

Maharashtra batted first and were off to a bad start, with Arshdeep wreaking havoc with his pace and swing/seam movement. He broke the furniture of Ruturah Gaikwad (5) and Siddhesh Veer (0) in his opening spell. Nevertheless, Arshin Kulkarni slammed a century to help Maharashtra post 275 on the board. Arshdeep finished with figures of 3/56 off 10 overs.

In response, Punjab couldn’t get off to a good start with their openers, Prabhsimran Singh (14) and Abhishek Sharma (19). Only Anmolpreet Singh (48) could be a proficient contributor among the batters for the side, as they were stuttering at 123/7.

At this juncture arrived Arshdeep Singh, who managed to play an impressive knock of 49 off 38, with three fours and as many sixes. The southpaw was the last wicket to fall for Punjab, as they were bundled out for 205 and lost the game by 70 runs. Mukesh Choudhary emerged as the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/44.

Although, Punjab failed to seal the semi-final spot, Arshdeep Singh ended his Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign as the leading wicket-taker. He picked 20 wickets in seven games at an average of 18.25, with best figures of 5/38.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the 15-man squad for the five-match T20I series against England. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side, with Axar Patel serving as his deputy. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj have been rested ahead of the Champions Trophy.

Arshdeep Singh is nearing Yuzvendra Chahal’s record tally of 96 wickets in the T20I format. With 95 wickets in 60 appearances, the left-arm pacer is second on the list, and can create history by becoming India’s most successful bowler in the shortest format.

Interestingly, Arshdeep made his T20I debut in 2022 and quickly rose through the ranks to become a consistent wicket-taker for the Men in Blue. It will be interesting to see how he fares in the series against England, which will serve as preparation for the Champions Trophy, scheduled to take place from February 19 to March 9.
