All eyes have been on Jasprit Bumrah ever since he injured his back in the first innings of the fifth Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The ace India fast bowler gave it his all in Australia and almost single-handedly kept India in the series till the very end.

However, his back gave in and he broke down midway through the Sydney Test. He was unable to bowl in the second innings as well. Bumrah had a back stress fracture a couple of years back which kept him out of action for 11 months. It was only in August 2023 that he made a comeback and has been absolutely vital for India.

He had a phenomenal 2023 World Cup (20 wickets in 11 games, averaging 18.65 and an economy rate of 4.06) before bowling India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup (15 wickets in eight games at an average of 8.26 and an economy rate of 4.17). In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he outbowled everyone on either side and returned with 32 wickets at a stunning average of 13.06.

The 31-year-old speedster is arguably India’s most important and valuable asset across all three formats at the moment. Hence, there is so much attention on his injury and recovery.

A couple of days ago, a Times of India report claimed that Bumrah sustained swelling on his back and has been advised ‘bed rest’ till the swelling reduces. It was also learnt that he is expected to fly to Bengaluru to report to BCCI’s Centre of Excellence and will not be rushed back.

However, Bumrah has dismissed all such claims. He took to ‘X’ (formerly, Twitter) to clarify the news. He reposted a news aggregator’s tweet and said that it was something that made him laugh.

Bumrah’s post read, “I know fake news is easy to spread but this made me laugh 😂. Sources unreliable 😂”.

India are yet to announce their squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. The deadline was 12th of January to submit their provisional squad but according to reports, they have sought an extension from the ICC. There have been multiple reports which suggest Bumrah may not feature in the initial stages of the tournament and could be fit for the knockouts.

However, with just a month to go for the eight-team event, Bumrah is racing against time to be fully fit for the Champions Trophy. He is most likely set to miss the three-match ODI series against England which starts on the 6th of February. There are no official updates from the BCCI on the status of his injury but a call may be taken soon.
