It’s been a bumpy road for England in white-ball cricket over the last couple of years. Jos Buttler took over as full-time captain in ODIs and T20Is after Eoin Morgan retired from international cricket in July 2022.
England started off positive under Butter and new white-ball coach Matthew Mott, winning the T20 World Cup title in Australia that year. But since then, they’ve been highly inconsistent and results haven’t been in their favour.
Since winning the T20 World Cup title in November 2022, England have a win-loss record of 14-25 in ODI cricket. And in T20Is, it’s 15-17.
They suffered a league stage exit in the 2023 World Cup in which they finished seventh. In fact, they needed to win their last two league encounters to qualify for the Champions Trophy which they eventually did by beating Netherlands and Pakistan. Meanwhile, they reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in 2024 but the only Test-playing nation they beat in that tournament was West Indies.
And now, they have lost both their games in the Champions Trophy 2025 and have faced another early group stage exit. They lost to Australia while defending 351 before they fell eight runs short in their run-chase of 326 against Afghanistan.
Hence, skipper Jos Buttler is in the firing line. His captaincy tenure could well come to an end at the end of the ongoing eight-team event. When asked about his captaincy future, Buttler admitted that he would need to consider all possibilities but doesn’t want to make any emotional statements.
“It’s tough to say, stood here right now, and I don’t want to make any sort of emotional statements. But I think it’s fair to say that you’ve got to consider all possibilities,” Buttler was quoted saying to Sky Sports Cricket.
There has been a bit of criticism around his batter and consistency as well ever since he took over as captain. The premier England white-ball keeper-batter has averaged 34.44 since November 2022 in ODI cricket with five fifties and one hundred from 29 matches. His T20I numbers are still better – an average of 37.32 and a strike-rate of 153.70. Hence, Buttler admitted that he enjoys captaincy but needs to figure out if he is part of the current problem for England.
“I’ve enjoyed it [the captaincy]. I’ve seen lots of people say it doesn’t sit well with me, but I do enjoy it. I enjoy the challenge. Obviously, I don’t enjoy losing games of cricket and the results. And, of course, when they’re not going well, you do look at yourself in the mirror and say, ‘am I part of the problem or am I part of the solution?’ I think that’s what I’ve got to work out,” Buttler explained.
Buttler to take time to figure out what he thinks is right

The current England ODI and T20I captain revealed that he will take some time off to think what is right. He will discuss it with the team management who will have their own point of view as well.
“You [the press] are probably not the first people I’d discuss that with. I’ll take a little bit of time to work out, personally, what I think is right, and obviously the guys at the top are in charge, and they’ll have their own views as well,” Buttler was quoted saying in the post-match press conference.
England’s final group stage game of the 2025 Champions Trophy is against South Africa on the 1st of March (Saturday) in Karachi.
