Champions Trophy impasse amid tough tussle between India and Pakistan

The schedule and venue of the 2025 Champions Trophy are in deadlock, with India and Pakistan unable to find the middle ground. According to the latest report, India has strongly disagreed with Pakistan’s stance of equitable and long-term agreement after the conclusion of the Champions Trophy.

In the ICC meeting held last week, Pakistan agreed to a hybrid model, but wanted an equal arrangement for them in the upcoming tournaments scheduled to be held in India. As per PCB, they would also want permission from ICC to play outside of India during showpiece events held in the country.

India are slated to host the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, 2026 T20 World Cup along with Sri Lanka, 2029 Champions Trophy and the 2031 World Cup.

Now, BCCI has put forth a strong claim in front of ICC that India doesn’t have any “security threat” and they will not accept Pakistan’s demand.

“Sources told The Telegraph on Tuesday that the BCCI has sent a clear message to the ICC brass in this regard leading to a fresh impasse. The BCCI’s contention is simple – there is no security threat in India and hence no question of accepting such an arrangement,” the report stated.

However, the same report further states that the ICC will reconvene in the next few days and the final decision will be taken on the matter.

Jay Shah becomes ICC chairman ahead of Champions Trophy

Former BCCI secretary Jay Shah took over the role of the ICC chairman from Sunday, December 1. He will replace Greg Barclay, who held the role since November 2020.

Jay Shah will begin his ICC Chairman's tenure ahead of Champions Trophy

Shah will chair the ICC meet on Thursday, December 5. However, there are still doubts about BCCI’s representative in the meeting, with Shah leading the way for the board so far.

The meet will be critical to finalize the venue and schedule of the Champions Trophy. With only 77 days left for the marquee event, it is imperative for India and Pakistan to come to common ground. Generally, ICC releases the schedule and ticketing details 100 days prior to the event, which makes in easier for the fans to make their travel arrangements.

According to Barclay, Shah has a great opportunity to unite the countries and take the game to another level. Apart from commercial interests. Barclay feels India could give opportunity to smaller Full Members and emerging countries to display their talent and increase the ICC’s horizon.
