Ace wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik is set to come out of his retirement to take part in the upcoming edition of the SA20. Notably, he announced his retirement from all formats of the game two months ago shortly after the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL).

Earlier, there were speculations that Karthik would take up the role of commentator post-retirement. However, he has now signed a contract with Paarl Royals and thus became the first Indian Cricketer to feature in South Africa’s T20 league. On August 6, Tuesday, the Royals took to X (formerly Twitter) and shared a video to welcome the 39-year-old.

“Batter. Keeper. Finisher.  Welcome to the #RoyalsFamily, @DineshKarthik,” Royals captioned the post. Reposting it, Karthik wrote, “Entering the ground again as a player. This time in Africa.”

Paarl Royals’ new signing was revealed shortly after Karthik announced his recent appointment as Brand Ambassador for the third edition of the SA20. Recalling the time playing and visiting South Africa, the 39-year-old expressed his delight about representing the Royals, a team that boasts considerable talent.

“I have so many fond memories of playing in and visiting South Africa, and when this opportunity came about, I couldn’t say no because of how special it would be to come back to playing competitive cricket and win this incredible competition with the Royals.

“I am delighted to be joining the Paarl Royals team which oozes a lot of experience, quality and potential. I am certainly looking forward to joining the group and contributing to what should be an exciting seasons,” said Karthik.

Kumar Sangakkara, the Royals’ Director of Cricket, lavished praise on Karthik, calling him as one of India’s modern-day greats in white-ball cricket. He added that the wicketkeeper-batter’s valuable skill set will be a significant asset for the side in the upcoming edition of the tournament.

“Dinesh has served as one of the modern-day greats for India in white ball cricket, and his wealth of experience will contribute to the making of our side for Season 3. He has always proved to be a great asset for the teams he’s represented across leagues for the way he approaches the game and the impact he can make, so it’s an exciting signing for us and we look forward to having him with the group at Paarl,” Sangakkara said.
