Former Indian batter-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar drew comparison between Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, Notably, both batters are part of India’s squad in the ongoing 2025 Champions Trophy.

Gill stepped onto ODI cricket in January 2019. Since then, he has amassed 2,688 runs at a sensational average of 62.51, with eight centuries. Iyer made his ODI debut in 2017 and has garnered 2,617 runs at an average of 47.58, with five centuries.

Despite making his debut earlier, Iyer hasn’t left much impact on the Indian team’s performance barring the 2023 World Cup, where he scored 530 runs to play a key role in taking India to the final. During the same tournament, Gill accumulated 354 runs.

In the last few years, Shubman Gill has emerged as India’s premier batter in ODIs and is currently serving as the country’s vice-captain. The No.1-ranked batter in the 50-over format has converted his starts into a big knock, which was most recently witnessed in the Champions Trophy clash against Bangladesh. He scored 101* off 129 to take India home easily.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer returned with knocks of 59, 44, 78 in the England series and a 15-run knock against Bangladesh.

As per Manjrekar, Gill has made a huge impact with his big scores and ensures he carries the bat as opposed to Iyer, who doesn’t give you the surity despite his talent.

“He (Gill) is batting at the right position to make a huge impact. When he gets a hundred, like today, it seems like there is plenty left in the tank. It was like 60% of Shubman Gill is enough to get a hundred like this and he stays till the end,” Manjrekar said on the ESPNcricinfo Match Day show.

“That is the difference between Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill that Gill will take you right till the end. He is somebody who you think is going to be around for 10-15 years. Shreyas Iyer, despite his obvious talent, doesn’t give you that impression,” he added.

Mohammad Hafeez praises Shubman Gill’s knock

Former Pakistan batter Mohammad Hafeez sang praises of Shubman Gill after he scored an unbeaten century against Bangladesh. As per Hafeez, Gill has gradually taken the role of Virat Kohli, who played as a second fiddle to other batters and stayed until the end for the side in the last decade.

“For the past three years, since Shubman Gill came to this Indian side, he has been trying to be the next Virat Kohli. He is trying to take that legacy forward,” Mohammad Hafeez said on Game On Hai.

Further, Hafeez lauded Shubman Gill’s ability to absorb pressure when wickets were falling at the other end. He added:

“It was his eighth ODI hundred, but it was one of his slowest centuries. But the thing that made me very happy was that he batted according to the situation. On this pitch, the requirement was to absorb the pressure, to control the game.”
