Former England pacer Darren Gough shared his thoughts on Ben Stokes’ absence from the England squad in the Champions Trophy. He feels the all-rounder’s presence could have helped the side in all departments of the game.
Notably, England came into the Champions Trophy with a 3-0 loss against India in the ODI series. Although, the Jos Buttler-led side managed to post 351 in the first league stage clash against Australia, they failed to defend the score. The loss has piled on the misery on England, who are struggling to win enough games in the white-ball formats.
In an interaction with Hindustan Times, Gough stated his belief in Stokes having the capacity to provide an all-round balance to England, which could have helped them end on a winning note on most occasions. He compared Stokes’ role to what Hardik Pandya does effectively for the Indian team. He said:
“Missing Ben Stokes has hurt them. He’s such a vital player – batting, bowling, fielding, he does it all. His absence is similar to India missing (Hardik) Pandya. Without that balance, England have struggled.”
Further, Gough criticized the England team for their inconsistency. He feels the side doesn’t have a plan, which played a key role in them failing to defend their big total against Australia.
“England, what can I say about England, it’s so inconsistent. When they get it right, it’s unbelievable to watch. With the ball, we don’t seem to have a plan. We have three out-and-out fast bowlers. Gone are the days when you can just bowl short. We got found out in India. In the first match, 350 on board should’ve been game over. They have to come back strong.”
Ben Stokes to miss The Hundred to focus on Ashes
Ben Stokes is set to sit out of The Hundred 2025 to stay fit for the much-anticipated Ashes 2025, which will take place from November 21.
As per ESPNcricinfo, Stokes consulted with Northern Superchargers’ men’s coach, Andrew Flintoff, before arriving to a final decision. He sustained a left hamstring injury during The Hundred last year, while suffering a recurence against New Zealand in December. The veteran all-rounder is reportedly recovering from the same injury.
Ben Stokes has notably ruled himself out of the white-ball cricket in his desire to extend his professional career. He wants to focus on red-ball cricket, with frequent injuries already affecting his career.
