England have been comprehensively outclassed in the 5-match T20I series by 4-1 but the discussion around the concussion sub topic continues to linger on. Chris Broad, a highly revered cricketing personality in world cricket and also an ICC match referee shared his expert opinion on this issue.

The 67-year-old went on to accuse the apex body of mishandling the concussion situation that developed during the fourth T20I between India and England in Pune. He opined that Srinath, who was the concerned match referee at the time used what’s described by him as “bias and corruption” while selecting Harshit Rana in place of Shivam Dube as a like-for-like concussion replacement.

Gavaskar & Broad launch attack on ICC over concussion sub row

Gavaskar joins the argument and has his say on this topic

Broad’s sentiments were echoed by former legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar who also blasted the ICC match referee for choosing sides. Gavaskar alleges that Dube was never concussed. Even after being struck in his head early on in the innings, Dube carried on and put on a masterclass 53 (34) before being run out by Buttler in the last ball of the innings.

Rana was introduced as a replacement but was subsequently declared as Dube’s concussion replacement in the 10th over. Gavaskar lambasted head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav as he felt that the move from Srinath to award a concussion substitute was clearly not the right move.

"In the Pune game, Dube batted right till the end after having got hit on the helmet earlier, so clearly, he was not concussed. So, allowing a concussion substitute itself was not correct. Yes, there could have been a substitute in case he had strained a muscle while batting, but that would have been only for fielding and he could not have bowled”

By evaluating the roles of the two players, both Shivam Dube and Harshit Rana are well known for their all-round capabilities. But Dube is more of a batting all-rounder while he can be handy with the ball at times. Harshit, on the other hand, is primarily a bowler who bats low down the order. The decision to replace a batting all-rounder with a bowling all-rounder caused a huge uproar within the English media.

In an ideal world, finding a true like-for-like replacement is not always a viable option but a solution must be put in place which does not excessively disadvantage the other side.
