Amidst a ground-breaking development, Geoff Allardice has decided to step down as the chief executive of the ICC with immediate effect on January 28. Allardice has served as the CEO since his full-time appointment in November 2021. He previously came into the picture in 2020 and served in an interim capacity following the ouster of his predecessor Manu Sawhney on grounds of inappropriate conduct.

Allardice’s association with the ICC can be dated all the way back to 2012 when he started as general manager of cricket after transitioning from a prior role with Cricket Australia.

Allardice conveys his heartfelt gratitude while signing off

While handing down his resignation, Allardice felt extremely grateful for the results that were delivered under his supervision. He also thanked his stakeholders including the ICC Chair, the board of directors, and the whole cricket community for supporting him in his quest to popularize the global reach of the sport.

"It has been a privilege to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the International Cricket Council. I am incredibly proud of the results we have achieved, from enhancing the global reach of cricket to the commercial foundation put in place for ICC Members. I'd like to thank the ICC Chair, the board of directors, and [the] entire cricket community for their support and collaboration over the past 13 years. I believe this is the right time for me to step down and pursue new challenges. I am confident that cricket has exciting times ahead, and I wish the ICC and the global cricket community every success in the future.”

Allardice’s resignation comes at a time when Jay Shah is in his early days as an ICC chair. The ex-secretary of the BCCI previously took over from Greg Barclay on December 1. Jay Shah also took the opportunity to extend his vote of thanks and lauded him for the contributions he made to scale the game of cricket to new heights.

Just like his predecessor Dave Richardson, Allardice preferred maintaining a low-key profile. However, he was seen as an instrumental figure within the ecosystem of the ICC. He is widely renowned for his role in helping BCCI address early concerns with DRS and ensuring that it was implemented as standard across the international game.

Moreover, Allardice was also involved in the creation of the World Test Championship and the now-defunct ODI Super League. One of his biggest achievements during his tenure was to propel cricket on the stage of Olympics which could have a defining impact on the longevity and the global popularity of the sport.
