The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to make a decision regarding the Impact Player rule for the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) Twenty20 tournament. If the board implements the rule the 12th player in the squad would also receive a full match fee.

BCCI said that they will soon provide the details about the playing conditions for the domestic men’s Twenty20 event, including the Impact Player rule in a recent letter sent to the state associations. Meanwhile, the governing body also informed the states on how to handle match fee distribution.

“With regards to Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, if a team decides to use the ‘Impact Player’ during the match, he will be eligible for 100 per cent match fees over and above the playing XI,” the BCCI has said.

The Impact Player rule, currently under review by BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, has caused debate within the cricket community. It is worth noting that, earlier Shah had said that the playing conditions for various competitions are expected to finalize the decision on this rule. According to Cricbuzz, there were various opinions regarding the Impact Player rule. Some support it for the excitement it adds while others believe it could undermine the development of all-rounders.

“Men’s T20 Playing Conditions will be shared shortly,” the BCCI said in the mail while also sharing the playing conditions of Men’s Multi Day, Men’s One Day, Women’s Multi Day, Women’s One Day, Women’s T20 and Women’s U-15, says.

In addition, BCCI had announced that if an Indian player is assigned to a state team, they will be rewarded a match fee corresponding to their role as either a playing or non-playing member.

Says the relevant portion of the advisory, “(I) 15 players will be eligible for Match fees (Playing XI will be eligible for 100 percent while the remaining 4 will be entitled for 50 per cent). (II) In case, where a Team India cricketer is deputed by the BCCI to participate in domestic cricket, he or she will be eligible for match fee over and above the 15 players based on his Playing XI and non-Playing XI status in the matches.”
