Matthew Kuhnemann has been reported for a suspect bowling action after the recent Test series in Sri Lanka. The Australia left-arm spinner will now need to undergo the compulsory bowling action test.
The test will need to take place at an ICC-accredited centre and Brisbane will most probably be the venue. Moreover, Kuhnemann will need to take the test within three weeks of being reported. The test will decide whether the 28-year-old’s action is legal or not. According to the laws, the arm of a bowler can bend up to 15 degrees in their bowling actions.
If Kuhnemann fails to pass the independent test at the ICC-accredited centre, he will be banned from bowling in international cricket till he corrects his action and clears the test again.
Kuhnemann was the leading wicket-taker in the recent Test series against Sri Lanka. He returned with 16 wickets in two Tests and averaged 17.18 while picking up a wicket every 34-35 deliveries.
According to reports, he is unlikely to take part in any international games till his test but he could feature in Sheffield Shield cricket back in Australia. However, this is the first time in Kuhnemann’s eight-year-long career that he has been reported for a suspect action.
Cricket Australia (CA) will support the left-arm spinner in every way possible and will help him clear the test as well.
“The Australian team was notified of the match officials’ referral following the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and will support Matt through the process of clearing this matter. Matt has played 124 professional matches since his debut in 2017, including five Test matches and four One-Day Internationals. He has played 55 Big Bash League games since 2018. This is the first time in those eight years of professional cricket that his action has been questioned. Cricket Australia will liaise closely with the ICC and independent experts in line with ICC regulations. No further comment will be made by Cricket Australia or Matthew until the matter is resolved,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson was quoted saying.
ICC Media Release for Kuhnemann’s suspect action

The International Cricket Council (ICC) also released a statement which confirmed report of Kuhnemann’s suspect action. The incident reported was the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.
“Australia’s left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has been reported with a suspect bowling action during the second match of their ICC World Test Championship series against Sri Lanka in Galle. The match officials’ report cited concerns about the legality of the 28-year-old’s bowling action. Kuhnemann will undergo an Independent Assessment of his bowling action at an ICC Accredited Testing facility to determine the legality of his bowling action,” a media release from the ICC stated.
Kuhnemann has played a total of five Tests and four ODIs for Australia. All of those have come in Asia. Australia’s next Test is going to be the World Test Championship (WTC) final and the left-arm spinner may not be picked, considering it is scheduled to be played in England.
