IPL 2025: Matthew Mott appointed Delhi Capitals assistant coach

Matthew Mott has been appointed the assistant coach of the Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 51-year-old is a renowned name in the coaching circles around world cricket.

Mott had a highly successful stint with the Australian women’s team between 2015 and 2022. Under him, Australia won the Women’s ODI World Cup once (2022) and the Women’s T20 World Cup twice (2018 and 2020).

The former left-handed batter was very recently the white-ball head coach of the England men’s team. He led them to the T20 World Cup title back in 2022. However, poor form in the 50-over format and a semi-final exit in the 2024 T20 World Cup led to his departure from the role earlier than expected. Since quitting the England job, Mott took up the role of an assistant coach at Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL).

Prior to these international stints, he has had various roles with New South Wales, Glamorgan, Australia’s men’s team (back in the 2010 T20 World Cup), Ireland (during the 2015 World Cup) and Australia’s Under-19 side.

This will be Mott’s second stint in the IPL. He was previously the assistant coach of Kolkata Knight Riders in the first two IPL editions (2008 and 2009). Mott will join an overhauled DC support staff.

DC announced Hemang Badani as the head coach last year, replacing Ricky Ponting. Munaf Patel was appointed as the bowling coach while Venugopal Rao donned the role of the director of cricket.

In a shocking turn of events, DC released Rishabh Pant ahead of the IPL mega auction for the 2025 season. The dashing Delhi left-hander has been a part of the franchise since making his debut back in 2016. However, Pant wasn’t retained by the IPL 2020 finalists.

They retained the likes of Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs and Abishek Porel. They went on to buy big names like KL Rahul, Faf du Plessis, and Mitchell Starc among others.

With less than one month to go for the start of the IPL 2025, DC have not yet announced their new captain. There are reports that Axar Patel might be the frontrunner for the job. But Rahul and du Plessis are strong contenders as well.
