Mohammad Nabi has been one of the pillars of Afghanistan cricket over the last decade and a half. The off-spinning all-rounder was a part of the very first ODI that the country played and he is still going strong.
The 40-year-old has seen it all and has been through the highs and lows with Afghanistan cricket. Be it from where they started in division five to attaining Test status to reaching the Champions Trophy for the first time, Nabi has been a part of almost every major landmark and milestone for Afghanistan.
Now, he hopes to play with his son Hassan Eisakhil for the country. Eisakhil represented Afghanistan in the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2024. He played eight games in Youth ODIs and got 132 runs at a strike-rate of 96.35. He has played 16 T20s in domestic cricket and has scored 426 runs at an average of 30.42 to go with a strike-rate of 123.83.
Nabi admitted that it is his dream to play for Afghanistan alongside his son who he spoke very highly about.
“It’s my dream. Hopefully we can do it. He is doing very well … he is a hard worker and I’m also pushing him to do work. I want him to make his own goals, if you want to get to be a high-level cricketer, you have to work hard. It’s not enough to make 50 or 60, you have to score 100-plus. He’s listening and pushing all the time. When he can talk to me, I try to give him advice to give him confidence for the game,” Mohammad Nabi was quoted saying to ICC.
Nabi may not retire from ODI cricket after Champions Trophy

In November last year, Nabi revealed that he would bid adieu to the 50-over format after the 2025 Champions Trophy. However, the veteran all-rounder seems to have changed his mind. He is unsure about his future but said that the upcoming eight-team event may not be his last in the ODI format. His fitness will be the determining factor.
“These might not be my last ODIs, I will probably play less ODIs and give chances to the youngsters to build experience. I’ve discussed with the senior players and in the high-level games, maybe or maybe not, we’ll see. It will depend on my fitness,” Nabi added.
Afghanistan have been highly impressive in the recent ICC events. At one stage, they were in with a real chance of making it to the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup but faltered in the last couple of games. But they made it to the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup. They will be one of the dark-horses in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025.
