Pakistan’s white-ball coach Aaqib Javed has shared his reasoning behind the side’s disappointing performance in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Notably, the hosts ended their campaign in the last position in Group A after failing to win any of the games in the tournament. They shared points with Bangladesh, as their clash was abandoned due to rain.
In their first game, Pakistan went on to concede 320, with the bowlers failing to be potent enough in the death overs. Then, the lack of intent eventually resulted in them getting all-out for 260 and lose by 60 runs.
In their high-voltage clash against India, the Men in Green were all-out for just 241. In response, India sealed the chase under 43 overs, with Virat Kohli remaining unbeaten on 100.
Javed pointed out the lack of experience on the Pakistan side, which saw the side failing to rise to the occasion in their games against New Zealand and India.
“When Pakistan and India are playing, it’s not only cricket – it’s more than that. You need a lot of experience,” Aaqib was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “This Indian team was the most experienced – they have almost 1500 games together. And Pakistan is on the bottom, with less than 400 games together. If you look at players like Babar Azam, [he] is the only one who has played more than 100 games. Then there’s Mohammad Rizwan [88 ODIs] and then Shaheen Afridi [64 ODIs].”
“The main thing is, when nothing works, and when you are talking about more than a game, then the experience counts. There is no doubt,” he added.
Aaqib Javed also shares his disappointment of not having the presence of regular opener Saim Ayub, who was ruled out of the tournament due to an ankle injury. The 22-year-old hit two centuries for Pakistan in their 3-0 ODI series win against South Africa ahead of the Champions Trophy.
Pakistan finished last in 2006 and 2013 Champions Trophy as well
This was the third instance of Pakistan finishing last in the Champions Trophy. Previously, they were placed last in their respective group in the 2006 and 2013 editions of the showpiece event.
In 2006, they secured a victory against Sri Lanka and remained winless against South Africa and New Zealand under the leadership of Younis Khan. Thereafter, the Misbah-ul-Haq-led side could not win any of the games in 2013 against India, South Africa and West Indies.
Notably, the 2025 Champions Trophy was the first ICC event Pakistan was hosting after 29 years, since co-hosting the 1996 World Cup.
