The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has demanded concrete explanation from International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the national anthem fiasco ahead of Australia-England clash in the Champions Trophy in Lahore. Notably, the Indian national anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana’ was played for a few seconds in place of Australia’s anthem after England’s anthem.

The development has embarrassed the hosts PCB, which is reportedly furious with the goof-up. As per PCB and ICC, the event-management agency was responsible for the error. The clip of the incident went viral on social media, with the fans and the cricket fraternity taking a dig at PCB and ICC.

As per the PCB source, they have not come to terms with how the fiasco happened when India is not playing their games in Pakistan, which leaves no possibility of making such a grave mistake.

“The PCB has emphasized that the ICC must explain the error, as their officials are responsible for managing the national anthem playlist during the Champions Trophy. Given that India is not playing in Pakistan, it is difficult to understand how their anthem was mistakenly played,” the source said.

It is worth mentioning that India are playing their all games in Dubai, after an agreement with PCB ahead of the tournament. Pakistan will likewise play in Sri Lanka, when India co-hosts the 2026 T20 World Cup.

PCB wrote to ICC after another fiasco ahead of India-Bangladesh game

On Thursday (February 20), wrote to ICC after Pakistan’s name was omitted in the Champions Trophy branding during the live broadcast between India and Bangladesh in Dubai. Notably, the Champions Trophy logo, which was seen throughout the game, did not witness the name of the hosts, Pakistan.

The logo along with Pakistan’s name has been visible in the other two games, which has been played in Pakistan. However, with Dubai game not seeing a similar arrangement, the PCB is said to have been infuriated and has demanded an explanation from ICC.

Although, ICC has informally conveyed to PCB that it was a technical error, the explanation has not met with much satisfaction. The apex board has assured the PCB of no technical glitch happening in the future games in Dubai.

“PCB is understood to be aggrieved at the situation and asked for assurances it will not happen again,” a report in ESPNcricinfo reads. “Graphics are prepared and provided to the live feed, produced by UK-based Sunset & Vine under ICC’s supervision, well in advance; that Pakistan’s name was on the logo for the opening game of the tournament has left PCB unconvinced over why the issue arose for the game between Bangladesh and India.”
