Indian batter Shreyas Iyer remains confident of contributing for the Indian side at any batting position. Iyer’s comments come ahead of the Champions Trophy squad announcement later this week. Meanwhile, the showpiece event is set to take place from February 19 to March 9 in Pakistan and the UAE.
Iyer was the third-highest run-scorer for the Indian team in the 2023 World Cup at home. He slammed 530 runs in 11 innings at an exceptional average of 66.25, with two centuries and three fifties. Notably, the right-hander scored 105 off 70 in the semi-final against New Zealand to lift India’s total to 397. The side managed to win the game by 70 runs, with Mohammed Shami picking seven wickets.
Shreyas Iyer’s last ODI appearance came during India’s tour of Sri Lanka in July-August 2024. He could accumulate only 38 runs in three innings, with a top score of 23, as the Men in Blue lost the series 2-0 (one game was a washout).
However, Iyer endured impressive run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai. He scored 325 runs in five innings at a sensational average of 325, with two centuries.
In a recent interaction with ESPNcricinfo, Shreyas Iyer expressed his hope of getting a call-up to the Indian side for the Champions Trophy. He said:
“I’m flexible and ready to bat anywhere in the batting order,” Iyer
“KL (Rahul) and I, we played that important role in the middle during the World Cup. We had a great season together. It was just the last bit (the final against Australia) that we couldn’t execute the way we wanted to.
“It will be a proud moment for me if I were to be picked in the Champions Trophy (squad) to represent the country.”
Shreyas Iyer to lead Punjab Kings in IPL 2025

Regardless of his participation in the Champions Trophy, Shreyas Iyer will have an important responsibility in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was recently announced as the Punjab Kings skipper for the upcoming edition of the cash-rich league.
“I am honoured that the team has reposed its faith in me. I am looking forward to working again with coach [Ricky] Ponting,” Iyer was quoted as saying in a release. “The team looks strong, with a great mix of potential and proven performers. I hope to repay the faith shown by the management to deliver our maiden title.”
Shreyas Iyer led the Kolkata Knight Riders to a title victory in the IPL 2024, ending a 10-year title drought. However, he was retained and not purchased by the franchise in the IPL 2025 auction. Nevertheless, the Punjab-based franchise splurged INR 26.75 crore to secure his services.
