Andrew Flintoff’s son Rocky Flintoff etched his name into the history books with his impressive knock for the England Lions against Cricket Australia XI on Thursday (January 23) in Brisbane.
At an age of 16 years and 291 days, Rocky became the youngest player to hit a maiden ton for England A/ Lions. With this knock, he got past his father Andrew’s record of 20 years and 28 days, when he scored a century against Kenya in Nairobi. Interestingly, Andrew is the current head coach of the England Lions.
Cricket Australia XI batted first and posted a 214-run total, with Ryan Hicks (64) emerging as the key contributor. Pat Brown was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors with five scalps.
In response, captain Alex Davies (76) played a gritty knock to give a good start to the England Lions, while Freddie McCann (51) continued the momentum. Coming in at No. 9 and when the Lions were at 161/7, Flintoff played a terrific knock of 108 off 127 balls, laced with nine fours and six sixes to help the side end their innings on 316, and secure a 102-run first innings lead. Tom Whitney picked four wickets for the hosts.
After the stumps on the third day, Cricket Australia XI were at 357/6, with Tim Ward scoring 120 for the side. Sam Cook has picked up three wickets for the England Lions, while the hosts lead by 255 runs.
Ahead of this game, Rocky’s first-class record read: 87 runs in four games, with a top score of 32. Meanwhile, he has garnered 167 runs in eight List-A games, with the best knock of 88. Interestingly, at such a young age, he represented Lancashire senior team and is certainly on the track to represent England, given he maintains his consistent form in the near future.
