Rohit Sharma has been the talk of the town over the last few months. Having opted out of the fifth Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), speculations around his future in Test cricket grew. There were even reports that he could retire from the longest format of the game.
However, he dismissed all such claims when he spoke midway through the SCG Test about him opting out due to poor form and nothing else. But there are reports which claim that his Test career is all but over.
In fact, the most recent rumours and claims even suggest that the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) have asked Rohit to decide his future after the Champions Trophy 2025. It is understood that the selectors and the team management want to ensure there is a smooth transition and Rohit’s future plans are critical to that.
With all this going on in the background, Rohit rubbished all such claims. He admitted that his focus is currently on the three-match ODI series against England and then, the Champions Trophy. He seemed irritated at the question and reiterated that his focus is on the present and nothing else.
“How is it relevant that I talk about my future plans here? We have three ODIs and the Champions Trophy coming in. The reports have been going on for a number of years. I am not here to clarify those reports. For me, right now, these three games and the Champions Trophy are very important. My focus is on these games, we will see what happens afterwards,” Rohit Sharma was quoted saying in the pre-series press conference.
We are awaiting some scan reports of Bumrah: Rohit
Jasprit Bumrah is another name that has been constantly doing the rounds everywhere. His fitness is one of the most talked about things in the lead-up to the big event.
The ace India fast bowler injured his back midway through the SCG Test and has been advised rest since then. Rohit spelled out some new information on Bumrah and revealed that the team is awaiting some reports from a scan. Things will be clear post that.
“We are awaiting some scan reports and once we get them, we will have more clarity on Bumrah and whether he will be available for the third ODI against England,” Rohit revealed.
Bumrah was named in the squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 and only the third ODI against England. Harshit Rana has been added as cover for the first two games.
