Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has failed the reassessment test for his bowling action conducted at the Sri Ramachandra Centre for Sports Science in Chennai. Previously, Shakib’s action was deemed illegal by an assessment test conducted by UK’s Loughborough University. As a result, he now remains suspended from bowling in international cricket, which ultimately resulted in him being omitted from Bangladesh’s Champions Trophy squad.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced the squad for the showpiece event on Sunday (January 12). Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead the side in the presence of veteran players like Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah. Notably, youngster Parvez Hossain Emon will likely make his ODI debut in the tournament. His selections come on the basis of his impressive performances in the Dhaka Premier League and National Cricket League.
It was highly unlikely that Shakib Al Hasan would be named in the squad given his inability to contribute with the ball. The member of the selection panel also insinuated that Shakib might not be considered for the Champions Trophy, which is set to be played from February 19 to March 9 in Pakistan and the UAE.
“If he (Shakib) is not bowling, chances are slim (to play in the Champions Trophy),” the selector was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
Shakib has been out of international cricket since last playing the two-test match series against India in October last year. He retired from the Test and T20I format, but made his plans clear of playing in the 50-over format. Interestingly, he last played an ODI game in the 2023 World Cup against Sri Lanka.
He had been active playing in the franchise leagues in UAE and Sri Lanka, but didn’t feature in any games of the Bangladesh Premier League.
How did Shakib and Bangladesh perform in 2017 Champions Trophy?

The last edition of the Champions Trophy took place in June 2017 in England. Bangladesh was led by Mashrafe Mortaza, as they went on to win one out of three games and ended in the second position in their group’s points table.
Then, Bangladesh clashed against India in the semi-final in Birmingham. Opener Tamim Iqbal slammed 70 as they went on to post a 264-run total. In response, Rohit Sharma (123*) emerged as the top contributor for India to seal the chase with more than nine overs to spare.
Shakib Al Hasan had an impressive run in the tournament, scoring 168 runs in four appearances, with a 114-run knock coming against New Zealand. However, the all-rounder finished the tournament wicketless, while delivering 28 overs.
