Former England player and coach David Lloyd has shared his take on Arshdeep Singh filling in the shoes of Jasprit Bumrah in the Champions Trophy. The marquee event is set to take place from February 19 to March 9 in Pakistan and the UAE.
With an ability to contribute in the powerplay as well as death overs, Arshdeep has emerged as India’s most successful bowler in T20Is. He recently got past Yuzvendra Chahal (96) to become the country’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is with 99 scalps.
However, Arshdeep Singh has played only 9 ODIs for India, with his recent appearance witnessing him ending with figures of 2/33 off five overs against England. Although, the left-arm pacer has done well to grab 14 wickets so far in the format, Lloyd feels it will be difficult for him to emulate Bumrah’s performance, who, as per him, is the best bowler in the world.
“It’s a great opportunity for someone to come in, someone who wouldn’t make the team. But you can’t get away from the fact that he (Bumrah) is the best bowler in the world, and if he isn’t playing for you, you’ve got a problem,” said Lloyd on TalkSport Cricket.
David Lloyd further claimed that it will be a significant difference in bowling workload for Arshdeep Singh, who is accustomed to bowling four overs in a T20 game.
“Massive difference – four overs to 10. If you’re the opposition, test him out; really get into him. This is not T20 mate, this is not a little party, you’ve got to come back and come back again’, that will be something he won’t be used to,” he added.

Sanjay Manjrekar picks between Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh for Champions Trophy
In an interaction on ESPNcricinfo, former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar shared his thoughts on who among Harshit Rana or Arshdeep Singh will fit the bill perfectly for the Indian XI in the Champions Trophy. As per Manjrekar, Rana has done well to prove his merit and make things happen, Arshdeep will be his preferred bowling partner for Mohammed Shami.
“I really appreciate his [Rana] spirit, and he’s got most of the right attributes. But, for now, Arshdeep Singh remains the senior bowler in the team. However, over time, Harshit Rana could make things tricky for Arshdeep, especially if Arshdeep is only the second seamer in the side, with Hardik Pandya filling the third spot.”
Notably, India has gone with four seam bowling options – Shami, Arshdeep, Rana and Hardik Pandya. With Shami and Pandya being certainties, one of the two spots may be filled by Arshdeep Singh or Harshit Rana. Meanwhile, the XI may include the trio of Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel.
