The United States of America (USA) cricket team produced a sensational effort to break India’s 40-year-old ODI record. They scored 122 and prevailed by 57 runs against Oman on February 18 in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match in Al Amerat, giving rise to a new record.
In March 1985, India scored 125 in their clash against Pakistan in the Rothmans Four-Nations Cup in Sharjah. Thereafter, the collective bowling effort saw the Indian team bundling out Pakistan for just 87. India’s record was unbeaten until Tuesday, when the USA bowling unit proved to be too much to handle for the Oman team.
Batting first, USA lost Smit Patel (0) in the first over. The wicket opened the floodgates for Oman, as they went on to pick consistent wickets, including USA captain Monank Patel (0).
Milind Kumar (47*) saved USA’s ship, as he built crucial stands with Aaron Jones (16) and Sanjay Krishnamurthi (16) to help the side in posting 122 on the board. Shakeel Ahmed was the most successful bowler for Oman with three scalps.
In response, Oman couldn’t get enough contributions from their captain Jatinder Singh (7). Only Hammad Mirza (29) could pose a little resistance, as USA’s bowling unit put Oman under pressure to wrap up their innings for 65. Nosthush Kenjige finished with sensational figures of 7.3-1-11-5.
Interestingly, it was the first ODI fixture after 4,671 games where not a single over was delivered by the pacers. The total number of dismissals (19) was the joint-most by the spinners along with Bangladesh-Pakistan game in 2011.
USA created history in 2024 as well
USA side shot into the limelight with their sublime performances in the 2024 T20 World Cup. As a co-host along with the West Indies, they received an opportunity to show their talent to the world.
In the Group 8 stage, the Monank Patel-led side beat their neighbours Canada by seven wickets to start off on a winning note. Thereafter, they secured a nerve-wracking victory over Pakistan, which went down to the Super Over. Although, the side ouldn’t beat India, they created history by reaching the Super 8 stage.
However, USA lost all their Super 8 games against South Africa, West Indies and England. Nevertheless, it was a great learning curve for the young team, who impressed everyone with their performances. After qualifying for the Super 8, they attained qualification for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
