We don’t give Jadeja enough credit: Ravichandran Ashwin heaps praise on fellow spinner

Ravindra Jadeja has been India’s premier all-rounder across formats for a long time now. Time and again, he proves his worth as he did in the first ODI against England in Nagpur. The left-arm spinning all-rounder returned with figures of 3/26 from nine overs.

His spell helped India apply the squeeze in the middle overs and also pick up key wickets, including that of Joe Root and Jacob Bethell. Jadeja’s three-fer ensured England were restricted to 248. Bowling economically and chipping away with important scalps in the middle overs in ODI cricket is something that Jadeja has done for more than a decade now. Add to that, his brilliance in the field along with his prowess with the bat in the lower middle-order.

In the first ODI against England, the 36-year-old all-rounder cross the 600-wicket mark in international cricket. He became 5th Indian bowler to scale the landmark.

Thus, Ravichandran Ashwin believes that the Indian media fails to acknowledge and appreciate good performances. He termed Jadeja as ‘Jackpot Jango’ and believes the Saurashtra all-rounder doesn’t get the credit that he deserves.

Jadeja goes under the radar. He does a thankless job with the ball and finishes well with the bat. We often fail to appreciate when a player does well. Whenever we lose, everyone becomes a villain. He dismissed Joe Root (in the 1st IND vs ENG ODI). He is a “Jackpot Jango”. He is +10 in the field, also bowls well and bats in pressure situations as well. We don’t give Jadeja enough credit,” Ravichandran Ashwin was quoted saying on his YouTube channel, Ash Ki Baat.

Jadeja was excellent with the ball in the 2023 World Cup where he picked up 16 wickets from 11 games at an economy rate of 4.25. Alongside Kuldeep, Jadeja did a wonderful job in the middle overs in that tournament where India reached the final. He also chipped in with 120 runs in five innings with the bat and had a strike-rate of 101.69.

Jadeja is way more gifted than I ever can be: Ashwin

Ashwin himself was very consistent over the years. While he faded away in white-ball cricket and was constantly in and out of the side in the last few years, the Tamil Nadu off-spinner believes that Jadeja is way more gifted than he was.

Jadeja is way more gifted than I ever can be. He is a born athlete. His major advantages lie in his physical fitness. He is naturally fit. Even at this age, he can cover the entire area from long on to deep square leg while standing at mid-wicket. I wouldn’t be surprised. And I will be more than happy for him,” Ashwin added.

Over the years, Jadeja has been an integral part of India’s setup at No. 7, playing a crucial role in the balance of the side. It is no different now and he will continue to be a vital cog for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025.
