WPL 2025: Shreyanka Patil ruled out; RCB rope in Sneh Rana as replacement

Shreyanka Patil - WPL 2024

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) injury issues seem to see no end. Shreyanka Patil is the latest addition to the injury list and has been ruled out of the entire 2025 season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

The Bangalore-born off-spinner is the fifth RCB player who has been ruled out of the tournament. Asha Sobhana, Kate Cross and Sophie Molineux are recovering from their respective injuries while Sophie Devine pulled out due to personal reasons.

Patil was the standout performer for RCB in their title win last season. She was the Purple Cap winner as she returned with 13 wickets in eight games at an economy rate of 7.30. She starred in the final and took 4/12.

The 22-year-old has been struggling with a shin injury and was last seen in action during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in October last year. Hence, Patil was not picked for India either over the last few series.

It was expected that she would be fit in time for the WPL 2025 but her recovery seems to be taking longer. Thus, Sneh Rana has been drafted in as her replacement. Surprisingly, the 30-year-old off-spinner went unsold in the WPL auction for the 2025 edition.

Rana was a part of the Gujarat Giants (GG) side in the first two seasons. She has six wickets from 12 matches at an economy rate of 9.02. She even captained GG in a couple of games in the inaugural edition after Beth Mooney was injured.

The Uttarakhand-born cricketer has played four Tests, 27 ODIs and 25 T20Is for India and has picked up 23, 29 and 24 wickets respectively in the three formats. She is a handy lower-order batter as well.

RCB start title defence with record run-chase

Richa Ghosh and Kanika Ahuja shared a stunning 93-run stand to help RCB chase down 202 with nine balls to spare.

Despite the long injury list, RCB got off to a winning start in the 2025 edition of the WPL. They hunted down 202 against GG in the tournament opener and created history. The Smriti Mandhana-led side recorded the highest successful run-chase in the history of the WPL.

Ellyse Perry and Richa Ghosh were the stars in the bat. The former set up the chase with a fine 57 before Ghosh plundered 64 off 27 balls to take the defending champions home. Kanika Ahuja chipped in with a useful cameo of 30 which came off just 13 deliveries.
