IPL 2025: Marco Jansen, Will Jacks most expensive overseas players sold on Day 2

by Tejas Rathi
Marco Jansen and Will Jacks attracted significant bids from franchises in the IPL 2025 auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction saw an enthralling Day 2, as the teams splurged money on the players to build their squad for the next three years. After the completion of the second day, a total of 62 overseas players received a bid from the franchises. Out of them, 48 of them were bought by the franchises on Monday.

South African all-rounder Marco Jansen stole the limelight on Day 2. He was bought by Punjab Kings for an amount of INR 7 crore and was the costliest overseas player in today’s session. Jansen’s bid amount was also driven by his impressive all-round performance in the recent T20I series against India, while scoring a 16-ball fifty.

Will Jacks is second on the list with INR 5.25 crore bid from Mumbai Indians. The five-time champions went all in to secure the services of the Englishman due to his terrific track record in T20s. Notably, Jacks scored a sensational hundred in the last season for Royal Challengers Bengaluru as well.

The young Afghan spinner Allah Ghazanfar hit the jackpot on Monday, as Mumbai Indians shelled out INR 4.8 crore to secure him for IPL 2025. He was the top wicket-taker in the Shpageeza T20 League and stunned the Bangladesh side with his figures of 6/26 in an ODI game earlier this year.

Australian players, Tim David (INR 3 crore) and Spencer Johnson (INR 2.8 crore) were the subsequent players attracting a significant bid from the franchises. In particular, Johnson was recently named the Player of the Series against Pakistan with eight wickets in three T20I games, including a fifer.

Interestingly, the experienced players like Faf du Plessis, Sam Curran and Rovman Powell received an underwhelming performance response during the auction, as they were sold for a much lesser amount than expected.

Prominent overseas players who went unsold in IPL 2025 auction

With a maximum of 70 slots available for overseas players, 62 were filled by the franchises in the IPL 2025 auction. However, the total number of foreign players entering the event was 208, and many prominent players could not find any takers in the auction.

The names include David Warner, Kane Williamson, Steve Smith, Mustafizur Rahman, Daryl Mitchell, Sikandar Raza, Jonny Bairstow and Shakib Al Hasan. Interestingly, Warner is the top overseas batter in the cash-rich league with 6,565 runs, but his international retirement sealed the deal for his farewell from the cash-rich league.
