Western Australia suffers a shocking batting collpase against Tasmania

Western Australia were stunned by Tasmania in the One-Day Cup 2024 on Friday (October 25) in Perth. After getting off to a mediocre start, the home side suffered a collapse by losing eight wickets for just one run. As a result, the side’s total went from 52/8 to 53/10.

Batting first, Western Australia lost their opener Aaron Hardie (7) in the sixth over to Tom Rogers. Then, the experienced pair of D’Arcy Short and Cameron Bancroft were slowly building a parternship by accumulating odd boundaries.

However, Beau Webster dismissed Short (22) in the 14th over to open the floodgates for Tasmania. Webster piled on the misery on Western Australia by trapping Bancroft (14) and skipper Ashton Turner (0). The talented players like Josh Inglis (1), Hilton Cartwright (0) and Ashton Agar (0) couldn’t handle the pressure as Billy Stanlake secured back-to-back breakthroughs.

Western Australia could secure only a solitary run in more than six overs, while losing their eight wickets. Interestingly, that lone run came from a wide delivery. Notably, six players were out for a duck, in the worst collapse in Australian domestic cricket history. Webester was the wrecker-in-chief with six scalps, while Stanlake snared three wickets.

The total got registered as the second-lowest score in the Australian domestic one-day cup history. South Australia holds the record for scoring the lowest total of 51 against Tasmania in 2003.

In response, Tasmania got off to a 33-run opening stand with Mitchell Owen (29) as the key run-scorer. But, they lost their way by losing three wickets for one run. However, Matthew Wade (21*) remained unbeaten to take the team home in 8.3 overs.

As a result, Tasmania recorded the fastest (51 balls) successful run-chase in the tournament’s history. They got past Victoria’s record of 67 balls against CA XI in 2015.

Steve Smith shines in NSW’s dominating victory over Victoria

The Moises Henriques-led New South Wales side clashed against Victoria in Melbourne on Friday. Batting first, NSW got off to a good start with Nic Maddinson (63) and Josh Phillipe (38). Coming at No.3, Steve Smith scored 56 off 53, with four fours and two sixes. The veteran batter returned to form after scoring 3 & 0 in the Sheffield Shield fixture against Victoria.

Thereafter, Matthew Gilkes (74) emerged as the top contributor, as NSW posted a strong total of 336. Peter Siddle was the pick of the bowlers with five scalps for the Victoria team.

In response, Matthew Short (80) proved to be a top-scorer for Victoria, as most batters failed to convert their starts. In the end, they were all-out for 196 and lost the game by 140 runs.
