A cricketer needs to be fit to stay on the ground for a longer period as cricket is one of the most time-consuming sports. The shortest format (T20 cricket) takes around 4 hours to complete one match.

A test match ends in 5 days and a One Day International takes around 7-8 hours. A cricket player’s diet is very important as it helps them to stay at their 100% during matches. A good diet also ensures endurance and recovery which is the most important thing in a sport like cricket.

In modern-day cricket, players are expected to be at their peak fitness. One can say that it’s nearly impossible to perform consistently at the top level without being fit.

This is why all the cricket players emphasize a lot on their diet as it’s a key part of their fitness. Players like Virat Kohli are known for their specialised diet which allows them to stay consistent on the field.

What does a cricketer eat on match days?

On match days, cricketers eat a pre-match breakfast which focuses on fullness without feeling heavy. They need to be energetic during the start of the game. The pre-match breakfast includes oatmeal or whole-grain bread for a steady energy supply. Protein-rich foods like eggs, lean meats or plant-based proteins help with muscle repair. They also take fruits and berries for quick energy boost.

After that, the players take snacks and in-game hydration to stay active on the field. It includes fruits and energy bars, electrolytes and small snacks. These help them stay hydrated, avoid cramps and provide energy for them to be active on the field.

Lunch is generally in test cricket. It consists of lean proteins, complex carbohydrates and veggies. It provides muscle recovery, and constant energy and reduces muscle soreness. Lunch for cricketers is generally easily digestible and doesn’t feel heavy.

Players also take hydrations and electrolytes frequently. It recharges them after the loss of minerals through sweat.

We all know that Virat Kohli has turned vegan and is very strict about his diet. He takes plant-based proteins along with whole grains and vegetables. Ben Stokes prefers protein-rich foods like grilled fish and meats. Australia’s David Warner follows a balanced diet.
