Michael Vaughan’s outlandish suggestion for Test cricket

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has suggested a big change for test cricket.

Recently, ‘draw’ has been a very rare phenomenon in test cricket. Only three matches have ended in a draw in the last 50 test matches played in international cricket. It’s a very surprising fact. This is mainly because of the weather as rain has cost a decent chunk of time in test matches lately.

Most of the test matches have ended up in 3 or 4 days at max. The recent test between India and Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Adelaide Oval is the best example of this.

Michael Vaughan while talking to the SEN Afternoons, said. “We’ve got players that are incredibly entertaining now. I’d start on a Thursday and finish on a Sunday”. The former England captain suggested a big change to the test format.

Michael Vaughan suggests 4-day matches for test cricket

Vaughan has suggested to make test matches a 4-day affair instead of 5 days. He said, “I believe four-day cricket would be easier to schedule. It’d be easy for everyone to understand that Test match, cricket starts every Thursday when we’re playing the Test match game and it finishes on a Sunday (if it makes it to Sunday)”.

The former England batter further added, “Let’s be honest, the way that the players go out and play their business now, they don’t play like I used to play or some of the teams back in the 80s and 90s played.

They’re playing a brand of cricket which is pretty much to try and win as quick as they possibly can and put the opposition under pressure”.

Vaughan concluded with, “So, I genuinely believe that the administrators around the world need to seriously consider if it’s time to go from five (days) to four”.

Just to add to this, England has already played a 4-day test match against Ireland back in 2023 at Lord’s. The game ended on Day 3.
