Things are not going great for Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. Firstly, he lost a home test series 3-0 against New Zealand. And, then India lost two test matches in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy after winning the first test since Rohit took over captaincy duties.
And to add to this, his form with the bat has been abysmal. He has scored 31 runs in 5 innings of the ongoing test series against Australia at an average of 6.20 with a highest score of just 10 runs. Rohit’s highest score in the last 15 test innings is 52 runs which is the only 25+ score he has scored in this period.
Fans and experts have been furious about Rohit’s captaincy and his batting form, especially in test cricket. There have been questions about his place in the test squad, especially after he dropped Shubman Gill and pushed KL Rahul down to number 3 in the last test match to move up to the top after batting in the middle order.
Speculations of red-ball retirement for Rohit Sharma after SCG Test
Amidst all this, there are speculations that India’s test and ODI skipper Rohit Sharma will bid adieu to red-ball cricket after the 5th and final test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
Earlier, rumors were that Rohit would announce his test retirement after the Boxing Day Test at the MCG. But now there are reports that Rohit has decided to retire from tests after BGT 2024-25 and he has informed about his decision to the BCCI and the Indian selectors.
Rohit Sharma has played 67 tests in his career and has 4301 runs at an average of 40.57 including 12 hundreds and 18 fifties. Alongside Rohit, Virat Kohli is also going through a lean patch. His problem of throwing his bat to the balls outside the off-stump is a big concern for the former Indian captain. India are currently down 2-1 in the BGT 2024-25 going into the last test at the SCG.
