Vinod Kambli shot to fame alongside the great Sachin Tendulkar. The duo are childhood friends and had shared a record 664-run stand in a school tournament. However, the Mumbai-born left-hander couldn’t really make it big and have a big international career. He played only 17 Test matches and 104 ODIs.

He was recently spotted in the inaugural Ramakant Achrekar memorial. Kambli didn’t seem to be in the greatest of health conditions. That left fans worried about the health of the 52-year-old.

It also resurfaced the debate whether Kambli’s childhood friend Tendulkar helped him enough. That’s when Kambli reassured that the master blaster stood by him when he needed him the most. Kambli revealed that it was Tendulkar who paid for both his heart surgeries back in 2013. The former was admitted to Lilawati Hospital when he collapsed while driving.

I was not feeling well. I was driving and suddenly collapsed. My wife didn’t waste any time and got me admitted to Lilawati Hospital straightaway. I had two heart attacks. Who even has two? I did. She saw everything. She was sitting next to me; she was crying. We have known each other since we were very young. Tendulkar rose in status. Sachin did everything for me. He helped me and did a lot. I underwent two operations at Lilawati. He took care of it. He paid for both my surgeries, helped financially – in 2013,” Vinod Kambli was quoted saying in an interview on Vickey Lalwani’s YouTube channel

Kambli even said that he was frustrated at one point as he felt Tendulkar didn’t help him enough. However, he admitted that the legendary batter had always been there for him.

There was a time I felt Sachin didn’t help me, but I was frustrated. The truth is, he has done everything for me. Our childhood bond has always been strong,” Kambli said.

There was another recent event where Tendulkar and Kambli met. The video went quite viral on social media.

Kambli also spoke about his recent illness – an acute urinary infection which resulted in him collapsing. However, he said he is ready to go to rehab and he owes it to his family.

My wife Andrea and kids, Jesus and Johanna, have been my strongest supporters. They have stood by me and ensured I get the care I need. I’m ready to go to rehab. I want to get better for my family. I don’t fear anything anymore because my family and friends are with me. I owe it to them and to myself to fight through this,” the 52-year-old added.

After his recent illness came into prominence, former legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev have come out in support of Kambli and have offered to help him in his rehab.
