West Indies vs Bangladesh - ODI Series 2024

Debutant Amir Jangoo and Keacy Carty got big scores while Gudakesh Motie chipped in with a crucial cameo as West Indies completed a 3-0 whitewash over Bangladesh. This was after Bangladesh had racked up a total of 321 and West Indies lost three wickets inside the first five overs.

After opting to bowl first, West Indies struck early. Soumya Sarkar was dropped in the very first over and Alzarri Joseph was the unlucky bowler who induced the edge. However, the 28-year-old West Indies quick picked up two wickets in his second over as he bounced out Tanzid Hasan before forcing Litton Das to edge one to first slip.

Bangladesh were under pressure early at 9/2 in the third over. It seemed like a repeat of the second ODI when they lost early wickets in the powerplay. However, captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Soumya Sarkar stitched a solid 136-run stand for the third wicket. Both batters scored at a good clip as the partnership came off just 20.5 overs.

It was Miraz who started the charge with a flurry of boundaries in the powerplay before Sarkar joined in. Both batters notched up their half-centuries in the 20th over. Just when the duo were upping the ante and getting big overs, Gudakesh Motie got the wicket of Sarkar (73) in the 24th over.

Miraz and Afif fell in successive overs. And it was Sherfane Rutherford who induced both wickets. The Bangladesh skipper was runout due to a superb direct from the Rutherford before the latter’s part-time seam got rid of Afif. That’s when Mahmudullah and Jaker Ali combined together to form a superb partnership.

The duo added 150 runs for the 6th wicket which was unbroken. Mahmudullah started slowly as he was 3 off 12 at one stage while Jaker got a couple of boundaries early in his innings.

Bangladesh were 217/5 at the 40-over mark. Both batters started to shift gears and they got atleast one boundary in almost every over. A late flourish ensured Bangladesh smashed 59 runs in the final four overs and they finished with 321/5. Mahmudullah made 84 off 63 balls while Jaker remained unbeaten on 62 off 57 deliveries.

In reply, Brandon King smashed left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed for two fours and a six in the second over. However, his quickfire start came to a premature end as he was runout in the same over. Nasum knocked over Alick Athanaze in his following over before Shai Hope edged one to first slip off Hasan Mahmud.

At 31/3, West Indies were in deep trouble. Sherfane Rutherford and Keacy Carty ressurected the innings a bit. The pair added 55 runs for the fourth wicket. Both batters were going at a run-a-ball before Taskin Ahmed got the big wicket of the in-form Rutherford.

Debutant Amir Jangoo walked to the crease with West Indies under pressure. He survived an early scare as a direct hit at the non-striker’s end could’ve seen him go back for a duck. However, he cashed in after that.

He got off to a slow start but Carty ensured that the scoreboard ticked along nicely. The latter kept getting boundaries and brought up his 5th ODI fifty in 49 deliveries. Jangoo was 13 off 23 balls at one stage before he broke the shackles in the 24th with a boundary over cover.

That got him going and since then, he never looked back. He struck boundaries at regular intervals and caught up on strike-rate as well. Carty continued in the same vein at the other end as the duo started to put pressure back on Bangladesh.

Jangoo reached his maiden fifty off 45 balls as West Indies raced past 200 in the 34th over. Right after the drinks break, the debutant was dropped on 61. Rishad Hossain was the unlucky bowler but the leg-spinner dismissed Carty on the very next delivery to break a massive stand. The 132-run stand came to an end as Carty fell for 95 and missed out on a well-deserved ton.

Roston Chase fell a few overs later as West Indies lost their sixth wicket with 88 still to get in 13 overs. 53 runs were required off the last eight overs as Jangoo and Motie went on a rampage. Jangoo became only the second West Indian batter to hit an ODI century on debut while Motie finished things off with two sixes in the 46th over. Motie ended up with an unbeaten 44.

Jangoo was awarded the player of the match for his excellent 104 off 83 balls. Sherfane Rutherford was the player of the series.

BRIEF SCORES: Bangladesh 321/5 (Mahmudullah 84*, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 77, Soumya Sarkar 73, Jaker Ali 62*, Alzarri Joseph 2/43) lost to West Indies 325/6 (Amir Jangoo 104*, Keacy Carty 95, Gudakesh Motie 44*, Rishad Hossain 2/69) by 4 wickets.
