West Indies put up a solid all-round show and gained an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh. It was Jayden Seales who set up the win in the second ODI in St Kitts. Brandon King along with the top-order ensured there are no hiccups in a relatively short run-chase for West Indies.

After opting to bowl first, West Indies pegged Bangladesh back in the powerplay. Seales was the wrecker-in-chief as he took three wickets in his first spell with the new ball.

Tanzid Hasan blazed away in the first few overs. He got a boundary of the first ball of the innings before he hit debutant Marquino Mindley for one four and two sixes in the 3rd over. But Seales helped the hosts bounce back immediately and he had Soumya Sarkar caught at mid-on. He then removed Liton Das with a short ball. The latter was never comfortable in his 19-ball (where he scored 4) stay at the crease.

Seales continued to take wickets as he dismissed captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz for just 1. Tanzid Hasan was motoring along nicely and raced to 46 but he cut a short ball straight to backward point. At 64/4, Bangladesh were in deep trouble. Seales finished his opening spell with figures of 6-1-14-3.

Afif Hossain and Mahmudullah tried to resurrect the innings. While the latter bided his time, Afif got a few boundaries. Just when things started to look better for Bangladesh, they lost Afif who tried to slog sweep Gudakesh Motie and ended up miscuing to mid-off. The left-arm spinner had Jaker Ali LBW in his following over before Mindley picked up his first ODI scalp, getting rid of Rishad Hossain.

With the score reading 115/7 in the 26th over, it looked like Bangladesh would be bowled out for a paltry score. However, Mahmudullah joined forces with Tanzim Hasan Sakib to add 92 runs for the 8th wicket. Both batters got boundaries at regular intervals as they helped the visitors go past the 200-run mark.

It was Roston Chase who broke the stand as he had Sakib caught and bowled in the 44th over. Seales then got the big wicket of Mahmudullah who scored 62. Shoriful Islam swung his bat around and struck a couple of fours along with one six before Romario Shepherd wrapped things. Seales returned with figures of 4/22 from nine overs while the other bowlers chipped in nicely.

King, Lewis, Carty help West Indies complete the chase with ease

Chasing 228, West Indies started off really well as Brandon King and Evin Lewis stitched a 109-run stand for the opening wicket. King started with three boundaries in the first two overs before Bangladesh pulled things back a touch. They bowled economically as West Indies got to 34/0 in eight overs. Lewis was batting on 6 off 23 balls at one point before he smashed Sakib for two fours and a six in the 9th over.

That eased the pressure and both batters kept the scoreboard ticking even after the powerplay. King brought up his half-century in the 17th over and it came off just 52 balls. Lewis kept hitting sixes every now and then before Rishad Hossain got Bangladesh their first breakthrough in the 21st over. The left-handed opener was dismissed for 49.

Keacy Carty joined King in the middle and the duo put on 66 runs for the second wicket. Both batters scored at a good rate as West Indies motored along quickly towards the target. Just when King looked set to get a ton, Nahid Rana knocked him over for 82 with an excellent yorker.

Carty couldn’t get to his fifty either as he lost his wicket trying to finish the game quickly. Shai Hope (17) and Sherfane Rutherford (24) wrapped up the chase in no time. West Indies hunted down the score in 36.5 overs and with seven wickets in hand.

They took a 2-0 lead and registered their first ODI series win over Bangladesh in more than 10 years. Their last ODI series win against Bangladesh came back in August 2014.

BRIEF SCORES: Bangladesh 227 all out (Mahmudullah 62, Tanzid Hasan 46, Tanzim Hasan Sakib 45, Jayden Seales 4/22, Gudakesh Motie 2/36) lost to West Indies 230/3 (Brandon King 82, Evin Lewis 49, Keacy Carty 45, Afif Hossain 1/12, Nahid Rana 1/36) by 7 wickets.
