India batter Shreyas Iyer said that he is “very keen” on a comeback in the Indian test side. He last played for India in the ODI series against Sri Lanka back in August this year.

In the ongoing Ranji Trophy Elite 2024-25, Iyer scored a brilliant 142 playing for Mumbai against Maharashtra. He has had his issues with a back injury but after scoring this century he said that his back is “100% fine”.

According to ESPNcricinfo, he said that it’s a special hundred and he’s “absolutely” keen on making a comeback.

Iyer told ESPNcricinfo, I am absolutely keen for a test comeback but yeah, as we say, control the controllables and my job is to keep performing and keep participating as much as possible and also see with that my body is in best shape. So I’ll take the best decision possible according to that.”

At the end of IPL 2024, he said that he was struggling with his back in the longer format but then no one believed him at that time. This was when he was dropped from the squad mid-tour against England earlier this year.

Iyer added, “The body has taken a lot of load at the same time. So we have to manage here and there and see to it that I strategise in terms of how I play. Now I have to be smart in terms of what decisions I take, I need to see to it that my body is in the best shape possible. As I mentioned previously as well, I have to decide according to that, no matter whatever people think outside. I have to listen to my body because I know the amount of threshold carried over the last few years and based on that, I’ll be making the right decision which will be backed (hopefully) by the team”.

An eventful 2024 for Shreyas Iyer

The year 2024 has been quite eventful for the 29-year-old. As he was dropped mid-tour from the squad then he lost his central contract with the BCCI. Then he had an excellent IPL as the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders where he won the title for the franchise.

With the back injury troubling him since the start of 2024, Iyer had to prove his fitness by playing domestic (long format) cricket. He has done just that by playing 5 domestic first-class games from September 5th and he’s playing his sixth game in the ongoing Ranji Trophy Elite Season 2024-25. With a strong performance in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, Iyer will surely be considered by the BCCI for the longest format given he keeps on performing consistently.
