England all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of the 2025 Champions Trophy, scheduled to take place from February 19 to March in Pakistan and the UAE. It all comes after he sustained a left hamstring injury in the ongoing ODI series against India.

Bethell’s unavailability was confirmed by captain Jos Buttler after the conclusion of the second ODI against India in Cuttack on February 9.

“I’m pretty sure (Bethell) has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy, to be honest,” captain Jos Buttler admitted after England’s four-wicket defeat.

“That’s really disappointing for him. Obviously, he played nicely the other day and has been one of the really exciting players,” he continued.

“It’s a shame that injury is going to rule him out,” he added.

Notably, Bethell played an impressive knock of 51 to help England post a respectable total of 248 in the first ODI in Nagpur. He then returned with figures of 1/18 as well. However, the southpaw missed the second fixture and Jamie Overton replaced him in the squad.

The Cuttack fixture saw assistant coaches Marcus Trescothick and Paul Collingwood named as sub-fielders, due to Jamie Smith still recovering from his calf injury.

Veteran batter Tom Banton has been named in the squad as a cover and will join the side on Monday. He recently smashed 493 runs in 11 innings for MI Emirates in ILT20 2025.

England kicks off their Champions Trophy campaign against Australia on February 22 in Lahore. However, the Buttler-led side would look to avoid a series whitewash against India in the final ODI on February 12 in Ahmedabad.

Jacob Bethell wants to be a genuine all-rounder for England

Jacob Bethell made his England debut in a Test fixture against New Zealand in November 2024. He soon transcended into the other two formats as well.

So far, Bethell has garnered 674 runs in 22 appearances. His finest knock came against New Zealand, where he slammed 96 only in his second Test appearance.

Recently, Jacob Bethell expressed his desire to become a “genuine” all-rounder for the England side. He said (via Independent):

“I’ll bat anywhere. I started my international career in ODIs at number seven. It’s my spot in the side at the minute and I’m enjoying it.

“I see myself as a genuine all-rounder. In international cricket so far I haven’t bowled a lot of overs in T20, I bowled a few in 50-over cricket.”

It will be interesting to see whether Bethell can fulfill his dream after recovering from his latest injury concern. He will be seen representing the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League 2025.
