Sunil Gavaskar’s advise for Babar Azam to return to form

Pakistan's Babar Azam

The legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar appeared on former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali’s YouTube channel to discuss Babar Azam’s inconsistent form. Notably, the former Pakistan captain Babar Azam has been facing flak for his inability to convert his starts into a big knock on most occasions and also not showing lack of intent in a big chase.

Babar started off the 2025 Champions Trophy with a knock of 64 off 90 balls against New Zealand. The right-hander was criticized for not increasing his strike rate in a chase of 320, which eventually saw the hosts lose by 60 runs.

Thereafter, Babar Azam started well against India and scored consistent boundaries, before Hardik Pandya induced his edge for 23 off 26. His wicket played a role in the Men in Green compiling a below-par total of 241, which was chased down by India in less than 43 overs. Virat Kohli starred with the bat for India with a 100*-run knock.

Gavaskar suggested Babar to change his stance which could help him to judge the ball better and score more runs. Here’s what the 75-year-old said on Ali’s YouTube channel.

“If you ask me about technique, I’ll just say one thing to Babar Azam. Right now, his stance is wide. If he reduces the width between his legs (while standing at the crease) then he will get two advantages – He won’t be uncomfortable moving front or back.”

“Secondly, when you close the gap, your height increases. You have a better understanding of the bounce, you are more upright and you can tackle the ball better. If he tries to do that, the run-making ability that he had will come back. If he does that, it will not only provide joy to the people of Pakistan but also the entire world,” he added.

Mohammad Hafeez tears apart Babar Azam for his lackluster form

Former Pakistan batter Mohammad Hafeez slammed the media agencies for calling Babar Azam a ‘King’ despite his inability to perform in big tournaments and the SENA countries. As per Hafeez, Virat Kohli deserves the tag due to his proven performances across the world.

Hafeez said (via PTV Sports):

“In reality, if someone deserves to be called King, it is Virat Kohli, not Babar Azam. Look at his performance. He has performed all across the world, not become a king by employing PR. Call out those spokespersons, show them the mirror.”

Babar Azam’s criticism comes at a time when he holds an average of 55.58 in the 50-over format. However, the 30-year-old is yet to return with exceptional performances in the Asia Cup and the ICC events.
